Cutting, Trimming, and Splitting Clips

✂️ Cutting, Trimming, and Splitting Clips

Once you’ve imported your media files (videos, audio, and images), the next step is to edit them — usually by cutting, trimming, or splitting parts of your clips to create a clean, polished video.

🎞️ 1. Cutting a Clip

Cutting means removing unwanted portions from your video.

Steps:

  1. Drag the clip onto the Timeline.

  2. Move the Playhead (red line) to the point where you want to cut.

  3. Click the Scissors (Split) icon or press Ctrl + B (Windows) / Command + B (Mac).

  4. Select the unwanted portion and press Delete on your keyboard.

Tip: Cutting is useful for removing mistakes, pauses, or extra scenes.

✂️ 2. Trimming a Clip

Trimming means adjusting the start or end of a clip without splitting it in the middle.

Steps:

  1. Select the clip on the timeline.

  2. Hover your mouse over the beginning or end edge of the clip until a double-arrow icon appears.

  3. Drag inward to trim off unwanted sections.

Tip: Use trimming to shorten clips or remove silence at the start or end.

🔪 3. Splitting a Clip

Splitting is similar to cutting but keeps both parts — allowing you to insert transitions, effects, or titles between them.

Steps:

  1. Place the Playhead at the split point.

  2. Click the Split (Scissors) icon or use Ctrl + B.

  3. Now you have two separate clips that can be edited independently.

Example: Split a long clip into smaller scenes to apply different effects or background music.

💡 Editing Tips:

  • Use zoom in/out on the timeline for precise cuts.

  • Enable Snap Tool to align clips easily.

  • Use Undo (Ctrl + Z) if you make a mistake.

Practice Task:
Import a 1-minute video and:

  1. Trim the first and last 5 seconds.

  2. Split the video in half.

  3. Cut out any unwanted part and join the rest.
