Importing Media — Video, Audio & Images
🎬 Chapter 5: Importing Media — Video, Audio & Images
🎯 Objective
To learn how to import video clips, audio tracks, and images into Filmora for editing, and how to organize media properly within the project.
🔹 1. What Is “Importing Media”?
In video editing, media means all the files you’ll use in your project —
🎥 videos, 🎵 music/audio, and 🖼 images.
Importing media means bringing these files from your computer (or external devices) into Filmora’s Media Library, so you can edit them on the timeline.
💡 Filmora supports almost all common media formats.
| Media Type | Common Formats Supported |
|---|---|
| Video | MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV, WMV, FLV, M4V |
| Audio | MP3, WAV, AAC, M4A, OGG, WMA |
| Images | JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIFF |
🧭 2. Ways to Import Media in Filmora
You can import media into Filmora in three simple ways:
🟩 Method 1: Using the “Import” Button
-
Click Import → Import Media Files from the Media Library Panel (top-left).
-
A file explorer window opens.
-
Select your video, audio, or image files.
-
Click Open → the files will appear in the Media Library.
🎯 You can import multiple files together by holding Ctrl while selecting.
🟦 Method 2: Drag and Drop
-
Open the folder on your computer where your media files are stored.
-
Simply drag the file from the folder and drop it into the Media Library or directly on the Timeline.
💡 This is the fastest and most popular way to import clips.
🟨 Method 3: Import from External Device
-
Connect your camera, phone, or SD card to your computer.
-
Click Import → Import from Camera or Phone.
-
Select the files and click Import.
📁 3. Organizing Imported Files
After importing, all files appear in the Media Library Panel.
You can organize them properly for smooth editing:
-
Rename Files: Right-click → Rename.
-
Create Folders (Bins): Click the folder icon → Name it (e.g., “Videos,” “Music,” “Images”).
-
Preview Files: Double-click a file to preview it before adding to timeline.
-
Sort & Filter: Use the sort option to arrange by name, type, or import date.
💡 Tip: Organize your files before editing to save time later.
🎞 4. Adding Media to the Timeline
Once files are in your Media Library:
-
Drag and drop a clip from the library onto the timeline.
-
Arrange them in the order you want.
-
You can place: -
Videos on Video Tracks (V1, V2, …)
-
Music on Audio Tracks (A1, A2, …)
-
Images or Logos above videos for overlays.

-
🧠 Shortcut: You can hold Shift to select multiple clips and drop them together on the timeline.
⚙️ 5. Managing Imported Files
-
Replace Missing Files: If you move or delete media from your computer, Filmora will show “Media Offline.” You can right-click → Locate → choose the correct file location.
-
Remove Unused Media: Right-click on blank areas → Delete Unused Media to keep the project clean.
-
Re-import Updated Files: If you re-edited a clip externally, you can re-import it to replace the old version.
🧠 6. Best Practices for Importing Media
✅ Create a separate folder for each project (e.g., My YouTube Project)
✅ Keep all raw clips, music, and images in that folder.
✅ Import from there into Filmora to avoid “missing file” errors.
✅ Avoid importing from removable USB drives (unless copied to PC).
✅ Use high-quality media (Full HD or above) for professional results.
