Project Settings – Resolution & Aspect Ratio
🎬 Chapter 4: Project Settings – Resolution & Aspect Ratio
🎯 Objective
To understand how to set the right project settings before starting video editing — including resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio — so your video looks perfect on every platform (YouTube, Instagram, mobile, etc.).
🔹 1. What Are Project Settings?
When you start a new project in Filmora, you can define how your final video will look — its size, shape, and quality.
These settings control:
-
The width × height of your video (resolution)
-
The shape or orientation (aspect ratio)
-
The frame rate (how smooth your video plays)
🎥 2. Opening Project Settings
You can open the project settings in two ways:
-
At the Start: -
When you click New Project, choose an aspect ratio.

-
-
After Creating a Project: -
Go to the top menu → File → Project Settings
-
Shortcut: Alt + Enter

-
This opens the Project Settings window, where you can modify:
-
Resolution
-
Frame rate
-
Aspect ratio
-
Background color
📏 3. Understanding Resolution
Resolution refers to the number of pixels (dots) in your video.
Higher resolution = better quality (and larger file size).
| Resolution Name | Pixel Size | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 480p (SD) | 854×480 | Basic videos, low size |
| 720p (HD) | 1280×720 | Good quality, small file |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920×1080 | YouTube standard |
| 2K / 4K | 2560×1440 / 3840×2160 | Professional or cinematic videos |
💡 Tip: For YouTube or professional editing, use 1920×1080 p (Full HD).
📐 4. Understanding Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and height of your video.
Different platforms use different ratios depending on screen type or purpose.
| Aspect Ratio | Format | Use / Platform |
|---|---|---|
| 16 : 9 | Widescreen | YouTube, TVs, monitors |
| 9 : 16 | Vertical | Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok |
| 1 : 1 | Square | Instagram feed, Facebook |
| 21 : 9 | Ultra-wide | Cinematic videos |
| 4 : 3 | Old TV style | Classic or CCTV videos |
💡 Tip: Choose your aspect ratio according to your target platform before editing begins.
🧭 5. Setting Aspect Ratio in Filmora
Method 1 – Start Screen:
-
Open Filmora → Click New Project
-
Click the drop-down arrow next to “New Project”
-
Choose: -
16 : 9 (Widescreen)
-
9 : 16 (Portrait / Vertical)
-
1 : 1 (Square)
-
4 : 3 (Standard)

-
Method 2 – Inside Project:
-
Go to File → Project Settings
-
In the pop-up window, select: -
Aspect Ratio: 16 : 9, 9 : 16, etc.
-
Resolution: 1920×1080 px or your desired value
-
Frame Rate: 24 fps (cinema), 30 fps (YouTube), or 60 fps (smooth motion)

-
-
Click OK
🧠 6. Choosing the Right Settings (Examples)
| Type of Video | Recommended Settings |
|---|---|
| YouTube Video | 16:9, 1920×1080, 30 fps |
| Instagram Reel / TikTok | 9:16, 1080×1920, 30 fps |
| Instagram Feed Post | 1:1, 1080×1080, 30 fps |
| Cinematic Project | 21:9, 3840×1644, 24 fps |
| Basic School Project | 16:9, 1280×720, 25 fps |
⚙️ 7. Background Color Setting
If your video does not fill the entire frame, you can choose a background color:
-
Go to File → Project Settings → Background Color
-
Pick from white, black, or custom colors.
-
Example: For vertical clips on a 16 : 9 frame, use black background for professional look.
🧠 Summary
| Setting | Meaning | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Number of pixels (video quality) | Higher = sharper image |
| Aspect Ratio | Shape of video frame | Choose as per platform |
| Frame Rate | Frames per second (smoothness) | 30 fps is ideal |
| Background Color | Empty space color | Use black or neutral tones |
