What is a Mobile App?

A mobile app (mobile application) is a software program designed to run on mobile devices such as:

  • Smartphones

  • Tablets

  • Smartwatches

Mobile apps are developed for specific operating systems like Android, iOS, or Windows Mobile.


Features of Mobile Apps

  • Easy to install and use

  • Provide specific functions (calling, chatting, gaming, banking, etc.)

  • Use smartphone features (camera, GPS, sensors, internet)

  • Portable and works anywhere

  • Often supports offline mode

  • Small in size compared to computer software


Types of Mobile Apps

1. Native Apps

Apps developed specifically for one platform (Android OR iOS).

Examples:

  • WhatsApp (Android/iOS versions built separately)

  • Instagram

  • Paytm

Advantages:

  • Fast performance

  • Uses device hardware effectively

  • More stable

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive to build (separate app for each platform)


2. Web Apps

Apps that run on a mobile browser (no installation needed).

Examples:

  • Flipkart mobile website

  • Facebook web version

  • Google web apps

Advantages:

  • No installation

  • Works on any device with a browser

Disadvantages:

  • Limited features

  • Depends on internet speed


3. Hybrid Apps

Combination of Native + Web apps. Runs inside a native wrapper.

Examples:

  • Instagram

  • Uber

  • Gmail

Advantages:

  • One app works on both Android & iOS

  • Cheaper to develop

Disadvantages:

  • Slightly slower than native apps


4. Gaming Apps

Apps specially designed for entertainment and gaming.

Examples:

  • BGMI / PUBG

  • Candy Crush

  • Free Fire


5. Utility Apps

Apps used for daily tasks and productivity.

Examples:

  • Calculator

  • Clock

  • File Manager

  • Scanner Apps


6. Social Media Apps

Designed for communication or social networking.

Examples:

  • Facebook

  • Instagram

  • Snapchat

  • WhatsApp


7. E-Commerce Apps

Used for online shopping, ordering food, etc.

Examples:

  • Amazon

  • Flipkart

  • Zomato

  • Swiggy


8. Banking & Finance Apps

Used for online transactions.

Examples:

  • Google Pay

  • PhonePe

  • SBI YONO

  • Paytm


9. Educational Apps

Used for learning and online classes.

Examples:

  • BYJU’S

  • Udemy

  • Unacademy

  • Coursera


Advantages of Mobile Apps

  • Easy to use

  • Portable

  • Fast access to services

  • Works offline (many apps)

  • Available for free or low cost


Disadvantages of Mobile Apps

  • Takes storage space

  • Frequent updates required

  • Battery consumption

  • Security risks if downloaded from unknown sources
