📜 History of C Language (Easy & Clear)

The C programming language has an interesting history and played a very important role in modern computing 💻

🔹 Early Beginning

Before C, there were other languages like:

  • BCPL (Basic Combined Programming Language)
  • B Language (developed by Ken Thompson)

These languages were simple but had limitations.

🔹 Development of C (1972)

👉 C Language was developed in 1972 by
Dennis Ritchie
at Bell Labs

📌 Purpose:

  • To develop the UNIX operating system
  • To improve the limitations of B language

🔹 Connection with UNIX

C became very popular because it was used to write the
UNIX operating system.

🔹 Standardization (1980s)

As C became popular, it was standardized:

  • In 1989, ANSI created a standard version → ANSI C
  • Later adopted by ISO

Over time, C improved with new versions:

  • C89 / C90
  • C99
  • C11
  • C17

 There are five generations of computer:  First generation– 1946 - 1958  Second generation– 1959 - 1964  Third generation– 1965 - 1970  Fourth generation– 1971 - today  Fifth generation– Today to future The First Generation   The first computers used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and were often enormous, taking up entire rooms.  They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, generated a lot of heat, which was often the cause of malfunctions.
